Brother Alexander Tingay

Brother Alexander Tingay makes in the studio at Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight. Molly Atrill describes his work as: Successfully combined elegant forms and a restrained palette of slips and oxidised stoneware glazes with intricate but suprisingly exuberant decoration, meticulously executed. Many of the abstract and geometric designs, the colours and forms are influenced by African baskets, pots, bark mats and calabash gourds remembered from his childhood family home in Zimbabwe.

Green Glazed Bowl

Beautifully symetrical and finely balanced on just the right sized foot, this bowl has great integrity. It is patterned with broad vertical bands of scraffito. Each band of decoration being different, the intricate design never repeating itself. A pale jade green glaze inside the bowl adds to the contemplative feel of the piece.
