The Anne Toms’ Yarmouth Gallery is a small and stylish exhibition space located at the heart of the ancient town of Yarmouth, at the westerly corner of the beautiful Isle of Wight.

David Richards

Potter, David Richards, divides his time between two islands, his home, Guernsey, and the Isle of Wight, where his grandchildren live. His smoke fired pottery is burnished after throwing and fired to 1000 C, outdoors in a large container of burning sawdust. The smoke makes the decoration: different markings are created by wrapping such things as rags, wires, seaweed around the pots. David sometimes uses terra-sigillata slip or crackle glaze prior to firing. After smoking, the pots are polished with bees-wax. David Richards also works with stoneware, using glazes and lustres to create pots which evoke sky and sea.

Two Small Vases

These two small vases have a vaguely amorphic form: seeming almost to sway together in a slow dance. The subtle patterning was acheived by wrapping the vessels with wire before smoke firing. 17x7cm and 18x6cm
