Emma Johnstone

Emma Johnstone received a first class honours degree in workshop ceramics from the University of Westminster, Harrow College in 1996. She is a professional member of the Craft Potters Association, and her work has been featured in many national newspapers and glossy magazines. Emma's pots are meticulously made and then fired using the Raku method, the fastest and most dramatically risky method of firing in which biscuit ware is fired up to 1000 degrees centigrade in less than an hour.

Vessels

These highly finished raku bowls have a precious, gem like quality. They are hollow, thrown bowls, each a double form in which the wide flat rim is ground back to reveal black cracks against the soft grey clay. The small bowl area in the centre of the form is gilded with with gold, silver or copper leaf. Inspired by a stay in Jerusalem, these pieces seem to radiate their own light and posses a strong, still, spiritual quality.
