An Exhibition of Paintings by Andrew Goddard

New at our Cowes Gallery, 18th June to 14th July 2010

"The tidal mudflats around the Solent on the Isle of Wight have held an enduring fascination for me for the past twenty five years. The luminous beauty of Newton in particular has inspired this current work. I find the constantly shifting landscape of mudflats: the rills, gullies developing into channels or the surface of a pond spattered with raindrops a perfect metaphor for the process of painting itself.

The challenge is in observing and depicting the complexity and fluidity of the subject matter. It is a balancing act between realising the essential qualities of the surfaces, interplay of ellipses and reflections, whilst holding the surface of the water. As in most of my work I am trying to depict the profound and personal relationship one has with a favourite landscape: to capture the quality of landscape which transcends the purely physical, becoming a vehicle for the inner emotional world of the viewer."
